Introducing Johnston Chiropractor Dr. Alan J. Schultz

I was really sick and running a fever for several days.  My dad loaded me up in the car and took me to the family chiropractor in Le Mars, Iowa.  The doctor did a few tests and took my temperature: 102 degrees.  He then "adjusted" my upper neck and upper back.  Fifteen minutes later he took my temperature again: 98.6 degrees.  I was impressed!  I really didn’t understand how it all worked until the doctor explained that the nervous system controls how the body functions and the spinal adjustment actually releases pressure on the nerves, making everything in the body work better.  In addition, the nervous system controls the immune system including body temperature, which is why the chiropractic adjustment helped relieve my fever.

Dr. Alan Schultz and Family I again went to the chiropractor for help with neck and back injuries from playing football.  When track season rolled around, I found the chiropractic visits kept me more flexible for running.  It was a natural way of feeling better without the use of medication.  It was this type of doctoring that led me to pursue the profession of chiropractic physician.

I began college at Westmar in Le Mars, Iowa with a track scholarship.  After two years I transferred to Iowa State University.  I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa State in 1983.  I was now on the road to becoming a chiropractor.  I then attended Palmer College of Chiropractic for one year before transferring to Life Chiropractic College-West in San Francisco.  After four additional years of chiropractic college,  I graduated with a Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 1987.

After passing the rigorous California State Board Examination I practiced in the Bay Area for a couple of years before returning to Iowa and settling in the small town of Johnston (then just 4,500 people) with my wife, Shelly.  We have been married for over 24 years and have 3 children – Alex, Andrew, & Andrea.   My oldest son is the third generation to attend Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.  He is majoring in Biology.  My middle son is plays competitive soccer with JUSC.   My daughter is involved with jazz and hip-hop dance at Dance Vision.  She is also involved with Johnston Show Choir and Dance Team.  They all get adjusted regularly.

In my spare time I enjoy tinkering with my collection of over 20 motorcycles and a few antique cars.  I inherited my interest in motorcycles from my dad, who restores vintage motorcycles like four-cylinder Indians, Hendersons and Aces.  Recently he sold one to Jay Leno!  I have to admit that it’s a little strange when Jay Leno calls your parents home!  My collection is a bit more modest but does include some old Harleys.  I recently completed my first restoration of a classic bike, a 1974 Kawasaki 900.

Dr. Schultz Asks some important questions of interest to Johnston residents - Chiropractor Johnston Dr. Schultz Asks...

Will chiropractic adjustments make my spine too loose?
No. Only the spinal joints that are fixated and "locked up" receive attention. The occasional spinal joint that moves too much is passed over so weakened muscles and ligaments can strengthen and heal.
Would you rather feel good or be healthy?
Ask most people in Johnston and they want to feel good. Careful! Would you take medicine that makes you feel good, rather than vomit to expel improperly prepared food? Every chiropractic practice member knows that you can't measure your health by how you feel. True health is when your body works as it should.
