When I was a child, I got really sick at one time and had been running a fever for several days. My dad loaded me up in the car and took me to the chiropractor. The doctor did a few tests and took my temperature: 102 degrees. He then "adjusted" my upper neck and upper back. Fifteen minutes later he took my temperature again: 98.6 degrees. I was impressed! I really didn’t understand how it all worked until the doctor explained that the nervous system controls how the body functions and the spinal adjustment actually releases pressure on the nerves, making everything in the body work better. In addition, the nervous system controls the immune system including body temperature, which is why the chiropractic adjustment helped relieve my fever.
In high school, I again went to the chiropractor for help with neck and back injuries from playing football. When track season rolled around, I found the chiropractic visits kept me more flexible for running. It was a natural way of feeling better without the use of medication. It was this type of doctoring that led me to pursue the profession of chiropractic physician.
I started college at Westmar in Le Mars, Iowa on a track scholarship. After two years I transferred to Iowa State University to complete my four-year undergraduate work. I was now on the road to becoming a chiropractor. I attended Palmer College of Chiropractic for one year before transferring to Life Chiropractic College-West in San Francisco. During this time I would once again see how chiropractic would benefit my life.
It was during my chiropractic internship that I injured my lumbar spine after riding my cousin’s horse. I felt as though someone had stuck a knife in my back. When I would lie down at night, I could not fight back the tears. This is when I came to understand real and intense pain. I sought treatment at the student clinic and received my first adjustment after the accident. My pain level was immediately reduced by 50% - it was as if the knife had finally been removed from my back.
After completing the California State Board Examinations I practiced in the Bay Area for a couple of years before returning to Iowa and settling in the small town of Johnston (then just 4,500 people) with my wife, Shelly. We have been married for over 20 years and have 3 children – Alex, Andrew, & Andrea. Alex enjoys tennis while Andrew is currently playing Premier Soccer for West Des Moines Soccer Club. My daughter is involved in jazz and hip-hop dance.
In my spare time I enjoy tinkering with my collection of over 20 motorcycles and a few antique cars. I inherited my interest in motorcycles from my dad, who restores vintage motorcycles like four-cylinder Indians, Hendersons and Aces. Recently he sold one to Jay Leno! I have to admit that it’s a little strange when Jay Leno calls your parents home while you’re visiting. My collection is a bit more modest but does include some old Harleys. I recently completed my first restoration of a classic bike, a 1974 Kawasaki 900.
For two decades I have been providing chiropractic care. I am motivated by my patients, their stories and their results. I appreciate each one of them for having faith in their body to heal from the inside-out rather than from medication or surgical knife.
I have designed my practice to provide traditional chiropractic care in a modern setting. My work is based on proven methods, technology and research. I am certified by the Iowa State Board of Examiners and have attended over 600 hours of post-graduate study in areas such as orthopedics, sports injuries, anti-aging and wellness. I also use biometrics - objective ways to demonstrate your progress. Our practice attracts all demographics, for instance, our oldest patient is 100 yet our youngest is less than a year. We see people just like you every day.
For my own health I get adjusted once a week, use an elliptical machine, run, and take vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants. None of my family members are on medication and my children rarely miss school because of illness.
